Random Techie Tip
Anti-Virus software is top priority!!
In the past viruses were written by college kids for 'bragging rights'. It was done just to 'say I did it'. The days have changed!! The production of MALicious softWARE, comonly called 'malware' is now a money making venture. It is estimated that the 'virus idustry' is a 2 billion USD a year industry.
Because the stakes are so high, the malware out there is getting more and more complex and dangerous.
What can you do to stay clean??? Here is a list of what you need to do to stay away from the bad guys.
- Never, ever download anything from peer-to-peer networks. This includes Limewire, Gnutella or any other file sharing networks. You will not save any money by downloading music and movies from these networks. They money that you should have spent supporting the artist will be spent at a computer repair shop.
- Keep your operating system, and your anti-virus software updated. Because new viruses are constantly being released your virus definitions need to stay updated.
- Know what your anti-virus software looks like. One way to get infected is when surfing the web you come across something that says, "WARNING: YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED WITH 16 VIRUSES. YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DOCUMENTS AND YOUR COMPUTER WILL NO LONGER FUNCTION. CLICK HERE TO CLEAN YOUR COMPUTER." If you ever come across anything on the web that says something like this. Do not click on anything instead turn your computer off immediatly. Usually pressing the power button will work. It is usually not suggested to do a 'hard shutdown' but in this case it may save you a lot of headache. To do a hard shutdown press and hold the power button down untill the computer shuts down. If you know what your anti-virus software 'looks' like you can tell when this scare tacktic is a hoax or when it is real.
- Do not do anything immoral on the internet. This includes looking at pornography, downloading pirated software and trying to learn how to hack or write viruses.
- Do not search for any free software. Instead use the term 'open source'.
- Try to stay away from coupon and bargin sites. Most are not malicous but the bad guys are always looking for new ways to get to you.
- Never open e-mail attachements from people you do not know.
